Newport County Boss Calls For January Reinforcements

Newport County manager Christian Fuchs has said his players need new signings in January as they fight relegation.

The Exiles find themselves in a very tough situation right now, sitting five points adrift of 22nd-placed Bristol Rovers and have lost 14 of their 21 matches in League Two ahead of a Boxing Day clash against Barnet.

Fuchs Outlines January Plans

Heading into January, Newport face a big task in signing new players that can reinvigorate their season as relegation looms. New manager Fuchs, who took over from David Hughes last month, spoke to the South Wales Argus about the kind of players he wants chairman Huw Jenkins to sign.

“We want to definitely bring some players in to give us more going forward and reignite the competition for the jersey and get that extra five or ten per cent out that we probably lack at the moment.

“In the second half [at Colchester United] we got the ball into the opposition half many times and played good football at times, and then it’s just that last pass and getting on the end of the ball that’s probably missing at the moment.

“Hopefully we can bring a couple of players in that will help us and help our players – they definitely need it.”

The former Leicester City defender is yet to win in his first six games in charge at Rodney Parade, with County winless over the past two months since beating fellow relegation candidates Harrogate Town at the end of October.

Can January Moves Rescue Newport’s Season?

As much as Fuchs downplayed the importance of the January window, it is very clear that if they do not sign some game-changing attacking signings, relegation could be a very real threat.

Sammy Braybrooke has already spoken about his desire to stay at the club with his loan move expiring this month, and securing him for the rest of the season would be a good start, but other assets are needed to get players like Bobby Kamwa and Courtney Baker-Richardson firing.

But as important is revitalising a defence which has conceded a league-worst 41 goals so far, with a more resolute backline perhaps being a better chance of securing points on a more consistent basis.

It is now up to Huw Jenkins to deliver some new options for Christian Fuchs to change County’s fortunes, and hope that the Austrian can get something out of his squad in his first senior managerial role.
