Midfielder Cameron Antwi has departed League Two’s basement side Newport County for division rivals Gillingham for an undisclosed fee.
The Exiles find themselves at the foot of the Football League pyramid and in danger of dropping into the National League. They are currently two points off safety, albeit with a game in hand over 22nd-placed Crawley Town.
With their EFL status hanging by a thread, it’s already been a busy transfer window for manager Christian Fuchs. He’s already overseen five new arrivals, although losing a key player such as Antwi will be a blow. However, it’s worth considering that the playmaker was out of contract at the end of the season.
Cameron Antwi Joins Gillingham from Newport County
Gillingham confirmed on their website that Antwi has joined the club this afternoon after a string of excellent performances this season. Ironically, his last outing for the Welsh-based outfit came against his new club, where he scored in a 3-2 defeat.
The 24-year-old is the club’s first signing this window and will hopefully help the club push for a play-off spot.
Speaking to the club’s website, the former Fulham youngster said:
“I am delighted, I’ve had a look around the stadium – I get a good vibe from everyone at the club and I can’t wait to get started.
“When I spoke to the manager I felt an ambition and there was a target for this club. That was the big drive for me. I could feel the energy as soon as I met him and Dobbo.”
What Will He Bring to Gillingham?
The creative midfielder, who has previously played for Blackpool, Southport, and AFC Telford, will offer the Gills a fresh option in the middle of the park. This season, he’s featured 24 times in League Two for Newport, starting 18 games and averaging 65 minutes per game. In those games, he’s received an average Sofascore rating of 6.62, the seventh highest in the Exiles team.
Despite being part of a struggling side, the Englishman has scored three times this season. Antwi also averaged 0.9 shots and 0.3 shots on target per game.
Having had a glimpse of his talent from the bench at the Priestfield Stadium last weekend, Gills fans will likely be hoping he can replicate that sort of performance in their colours once he makes his debut.
