Newport County are closing in on the loan signing of a Championship midfielder, as the League Two side aim to continue their strong start to the current campaign.
The Welsh side have experienced a strong start to their current campaign, despite an opening-day defeat against Cheltenham Town as well as an early EFL Cup exit.
Despite conceding seven goals in their first two matches, Newport have responded with back-to-back 3-1 victories against Doncaster Rovers and Accrington Stanley to put themselves fifth in League Two ahead of Saturday’s trip to Morecambe.
However, the large number of conceded goals could explain their reasoning behind bringing in the midfielder as they could be aiming to tighten up the spine of the squad.
Mawene to Newport?
According to a report from journalist Alan Nixon, Newport County are closing in on the loan signing of midfielder Noah Mawene from Championship side Preston North End for the duration of the 2024/25 season.
The 19-year-old has made a handful of first-team appearances under former manager Ryan Lowe but is expected to join the League Two side before Friday’s deadline in order to earn regular first-team football away from Deepdale.
How did he fare last season?
Mawene burst onto the first-team scene with Preston North End last season, featuring seven times in the Championship which included two starts against both Birmingham City and Southampton.
He featured in five of Preston’s last nine league matches last season and helped to keep two clean sheets for his side and has continued to push himself to become a regular first-team player at Deepdale, especially following the loss of former captain Alan Browne whose since signed for Sunderland.
The midfielder is expected to sign for Newport County before Friday’s deadline according to Alan Nixon, which also suggests he will be available for their trip to the Shrimps this weekend.
