Northampton Town have confirmed that duo Lee Burge and Ben Fox have signed new contracts with the League One side, via statements on the club’s website.
The duo have secured their futures at Sixfields ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as the Cobblers begin to prepare for a fierce 2024/25 campaign under Jon Brady.
How did the duo fair last season?
Beginning with Cobblers shot-stopper Lee Burge, the 31-year-old made 20 league appearances last season for the League One side and kept four clean sheets in the process but conceded 1.3 goals per 90 minutes. However, he found himself as the club’s number two behind Wolves loanee Louie Moulden who arrived in January.
Meanwhile, Fox suffered an injury-hit season for the Cobblers, but also made 20 appearances in all competitions. During that time, the 26-year-old contributed to one goal which arrived during an EFL Trophy match against Chelsea’s U21s.
Why is this good news for Northampton fans?
With the Cobblers finishing 14th last season, it confirmed their highest league finish since the 2007/08 campaign and keeping a hold of that squad will potentially place Jon Brady’s side in a strong position heading into the summer transfer window.
This is because the manager will have a clearer idea of what positions he needs to focus on this summer, whilst keeping the spine of his squad secure.
Can Northampton improve on last season?
On paper, League One appears to be stronger next season with the likes of Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Wrexham and Stockport County joining the division, which means sides like Northampton Town will need to work harder in the summer to improve on their previous campaign.
However, Fox and Burge both possess plenty of EFL experience, with Burge in particular being a two-time EFL Trophy winner as well as a Golden Glove & League Two promotion winner during his spell with Coventry City and his experience is likely to be vital for the younger players within the squad.
