Northampton Town Eye Swoop For Departing National League Forward

Northampton Town are eyeing up a move for departing Sutton United forward Omari Patrick, as he becomes a free agent following the expiry of his contract.

The 28-year-old was heavily involved for Sutton United in League Two last season but wasn’t able to keep his side in the EFL and will now be available on a free transfer this summer.

However, it now appears as though his next destination could take Patrick to Northampton Town in League One, according to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke.

How did Patrick fare last season?

After arriving on a free transfer from Carlisle United, Patrick made a total of 43 appearances in all competitions for Sutton United, scoring six goals and providing an additional assist.

This tally included a brace on his debut during a 5-1 victory against Notts County on the opening day of the 2023/24 campaign.

Patrick featured predominantly as a left-winger but can also feature on the opposite side of the pitch.

Is this a good signing for Northampton?

Throughout his entire career, Patrick has been limited to just 27 appearances in League One although the majority of these were off the bench.

The Cobblers secured their highest league position in over a decade last season as they finished in the top half of League One and are likely to want to go one better next season.

For that to happen, Northampton have to strengthen across the board this summer, especially given the difficulties that League One is expected to have next season with the likes of Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Wrexham and Stockport County all joining the division.

Patrick can play on either side of the pitch, which would bolster their versatility and squad options.

Should Patrick join the Cobblers?

Given just 27 of his 204 first-team appearances have come in League One, there could be an argument that Patrick has unfinished business in the third tier, having suffered limited minutes for both Bradford and Burton Albion.

Northampton secured their best season in a while last time out, creating an exciting environment for Patrick to potentially walk into this summer.

Although he could suffer a drop in regular first-team minutes, the opportunity to prove himself in the third tier could prove to be too difficult to turn down.
