Norwich City are looking for a new manager, and it appears interim coach Jack Wilshere will take the role.
Following the sacking of Johannes Hoff Thorup, Norwich City look set to make the former Arsenal midfielder’s interim role permanent going into the 2025-26 campaign.
This follows a disappointing campaign for the East Anglian side, who sit 14th in the EFL Championship, possibly set for their lowest finish in the division since the 2017-18 season.
Consequently, Johannes Hoff Thorup’s time at Carrow Road came to an end, with Jack Wilshere taking interim charge for the remainder of the campaign.
It has since been reported by EFL Analysis that Jack Wilshere will take the role at Carrow Road on a permanent basis next year.
The report suggests that Norwich have had an abundance of candidates for the role; however, director Ben Knapper is more than happy for the 33-year-old to take charge for the foreseeable.
A first job for Wilshere
The former England international retired from professional football in 2022, where he took on a managerial role at Arsenal’s under-18 side.
Wilshere then went on to take a role in the first-team coaching staff at Norwich City last October, working closely with the first team throughout the campaign.
In a quick turnaround, Wilshere took charge of the club on an interim basis less than two weeks ago, seeing his Canaries side earn a point in a 0-0 draw away at Middlesbrough.
Taking the role at age 33, this job poses pressure, with Norwich usually expected to be amongst the promotion-chasing pack in the Championship. However, Norwich are set for their fourth season in the division.
What next for Norwich City?
Boasting two of the division’s most potent forwards, Borja Sainz and Joshua Sargent, Norwich are the division’s second-highest goalscorers, and fans will feel the talent at disposal has been a wasted opportunity.
The side can now only finish as high as twelfth, welcoming relegated side Cardiff City to Carrow Road for their final fixture.
Fans will feel the team have heavily underperformed this campaign, having finished sixth last year.
If the Englishman is to take charge at Norwich City, his first challenge will be navigating a potentially difficult summer window, with the likes of Joshua Sargent and Borja Sainz likely to be subjects of interest.
It has also been confirmed that the East Anglian side will lose the services of Onel Hernandez, Angus Gunn, and Jacob Sørensen, with the trio’s contracts set to expire in the summer with the club not offering new terms.
It is yet to be seen what style of manager Wilshere is; however, at a young age it will be a real test for the coach to steer Norwich through a likely transitional period.
