Norwich City Trio Set to Leave in the Summer

Norwich City players Angus Gunn, Onel Hernández and Jacob Sørensen will leave the Championship side at the end of the season, following the expiry of their contracts.

All three have been loyal servants to the club and have made 430 combined appearances for the East Anglian outfit.

Gunn signed on a permanent deal from recently relegated side Southampton in 2021, although he also had a loan spell with the club in the 2017/18 season.

Hernández joined the Canaries in 2018 from German side Eintracht Braunschweig and has been sent out on loan twice during his seven years with the club – to fellow Championship side Middlesbrough and newly crowned League One champions Birmingham City.

Sørensen has been with Norwich since the summer of 2020 after arriving from Danish Superliga outfit Esbjerg fB.

No clubs have yet been directly mentioned as possible destinations for the trio, but they will likely attract a lot of interest in the summer transfer window.

How have they fared this season for Norwich City?

Gunn has started 39 out of 45 matches for the Canaries this season, conceding 40 goals and keeping eight clean sheets in that time.

Overall, this season the Scotsman has struggled for form, helping the club to a 17.8% clean sheet rate, the joint-third worst in the Championship with Cardiff City and in front of Plymouth Argyle and Hull City – with all three clubs currently occupying the relegation zone.

Hernández has also had a difficult season at Carrow Road – making just 22 appearances without scoring and providing just three assists.

However, the Cuban international has struggled with a couple of injuries this season – missing 13 games due to hamstring and knee problems.

Like his Norwich counterpart, Sørensen has also experienced injury difficulties during the campaign, with a foot injury limiting him to just 14 starts all season.

The 27-year-old has failed to register a single goal contribution this season and has missed 12 games due to injuries.

Which clubs could sign the Norwich City trio?

All three players are set to leave the club on a free transfer due to no new contracts being offered, so a range of clubs could well look to secure their services at no cost.

Gunn’s former loan side Stoke City could secure their Championship status if they beat Derby County and results go their way this weekend, and the Bet365 Stadium could be an ideal next move for the 29-year-old.

With current Potters shot-stopper Viktor Johansson being linked with a move to Bournemouth, Stoke could turn to Gunn as a replacement – with almost 200 Championship appearances under his belt adding a wealth of experience to a struggling squad.

Hernández may well look to move abroad after his struggles in English football this season, and a transfer back to Germany could be an option.

The winger played 177 times there before his transfer to Norwich, scoring 17 goals and regularly featured for the reserve teams of VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen – two huge clubs in German football.

Sørensen may also favour a return to a previous country, as he enjoyed a positive spell with previous side Esbjerg fB in Denmark before signing for Norwich in 2020.

The midfielder played 105 games for the Danish Superliga outfit and scored five times, so a return to his hometown club may be on the cards – with Esbjerg fB recently finishing bottom of the Danish 1st Division, so they will no doubt be looking to restrengthen ahead of next season.
