Chesterfield defender Jeff King has confirmed his exit from the club, whilst free agent Paddy Madden looks set to join the Spireites, according to separate reports from Derbyshire Times and journalist Sam Byrne.

The Spireites have clinched their return to the EFL following winning the National League title and have now begun their plans to compete in the fourth tier next season and potentially follow in Wrexham’s footsteps.

End of an era

Jeff King has been at Chesterfield since his 2021 move from Halifax Town and has made over 100 first-team appearances under Paul Cook but is now set to depart upon the expiry of his contract.

The 28-year-old made just 19 appearances last season despite being a regular starter in the two seasons before and has now announced his exit from the club.

He stated…

“All good things must come to an end. My three years at Chesterfield have been a great ride. Play-off semi-final, play-off final, and finally champions.

“I’ve met some great people along the way and friends I have made for life. Thank you to all the supporters who have supported me through my time at Chesterfield.

“The club is in great hands. I wish nothing but success for the club moving forward.”

Madden on the way in?

Stockport County recently confirmed the departure of striker Paddy Madden after the two parties failed to agree on a new contract following the club’s League Two title triumph, which left the Irishman as a free agent.

Paul Cook’s side have several talented forwards including James Berry and the experienced Will Grigg, but according to journalist Sam Byrne, Chesterfield are the favourites to land Madden on a free transfer ahead of their League Two return.

Madden scored 22 goals in all competitions last season for Stockport and looks set to join the Spireites on a free transfer, reuniting with former teammate Ash Palmer.

Back in the fourth tier

After coming within a penalty shot out of reaching the EFL last season, Chesterfield appeared to use their heartbreak as motivation to go one better as they cruised to the National League title this season.

The Spireires finished 12 points clear of Barnet, whilst scoring an eye-catching 106 league goals and winning 31 of their 46 league matches and now begin to prepare for life in League Two once again.
