Club Owner Confirms Gillingham’s Interest In League Two Playmaker

Following the signing of Crewe Alexandra’s Elliott Nevitt, Gillingham are looking to add another as Accrington Stanley’s Jack Nolan has been linked with a move, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Despite finishing 12th in League Two and being in the playoff conversation for the majority of the season, only rock-bottom Forest Green Rovers scored less goals than the Gills.

With centre forward Nevitt already under their belts, the Kent-based side seem to be setting their sights on Accrington Stanley’s goal-scoring winger but all is not quite as it seems.

How did Nolan fair last season?

The winger scored 17 goals in 39 League Two starts in the last campaign, whilst registering eight assists too. This put Nolan joint seventh in League Two for goals involvements, and directly involved in 39% of Accrington’s league scoring tally.

He also managed five assists in eight cup appearances for Accrington last season, taking his total contributions to 31 in 53 matches.

Why is it not as straight forward as it seems?

Whilst O’Rourke’s reporting suggests a deal being struck is imminent, a tweet from Accrington Stanley Chairman Andy Holt (@AndyhHolt), suggests the two clubs are not quite as close.

He posted a response to Pete O’Rourke’s post stating

‘Let me know details of agreement Pete. We have had contact…’

Would this be a good move for Gillingham?

Gillingham struggled in the final third last season and a lack of goals is likely to have played a significant role in the club failing to reach the League Two playoff places last season.

Nolan contributed to 25 league goals for Accrington Stanley last season following their relegation from League One in the previous campaign.

Landing a prolific individual whilst reducing the quality from a fellow League Two side is likely to have a significant effect heading into the 2024/25 campaign and boosts their chances of making the top seven.
