Championship newcomers Oxford United have confirmed the signing of Matt Ingram from Hull City.

Ingram joins the club as they prepare for a return to the second tier of English football.

Des Buckingham’s side were victorious in the League One Play-Off Final last season, beating Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at Wembley.

The deal, which is for an undisclosed fee, was welcomed by the manager, who told the club’s website:

“Matt is a very experienced goalkeeper in the Championship and throughout the EFL.

“He will add some valuable experience while also complimenting the way we want to play. His experience and leadership qualities will add value to what is a very strong goalkeeping department led extremely well by our Goalkeeping Coach, Lewis Price.

“Matt is a great addition to our group and a wonderful character to bring in as we continue to develop our culture and environment”.

Ingram – A Welcome Addition

Ingram joins the U’s with 295 games in the Football League under his belt, 74 of those in the Championship.

The 30-year-old started his career with Wycombe Wanderers after progressing through their youth ranks and into their first team.

He played 141 times for Wycombe before earning himself a move to Championship side Queens Park Rangers. The move was for an undisclosed fee, but he went on to only play 19 games for QPR.

After a loan with Northampton and back at Wycombe, he joined Hull City on a permanent deal. Ingram played 111 games for Hull City before his move to Oxford United which was confirmed today.

Is Ingram a good signing for Oxford United?

Signing Ingram offers Oxford United a goalkeeper with lots of Championship experience as they prepare for what is going to be a tough season for them.

Ingram didn’t feature heavily last season, playing just ten games last season for Hull. However, he did play 22 times the season before and 31 times in the 2021/22 season, including in the playoffs for Luton Town.

The club already have Jamie Cumming and Jacob Knightsbridge at the club. Cumming was the goalkeeper for the second half of the season after James Beadle’s loan was cut short so he could join Sheffield Wednesday.

Buckingham has a choice to make over who’s going to be his side’s number one, with plenty of options. He might stick with Cumming, who played a crucial role in their promotion or go with the experienced Ingram.
