Peterborough United In Talks to Sign Non-League Star

PETERBOROUGH UNITED

After a disappointing League One campaign, Peterborough United are looking ahead to the summer and considering where they can improve their squad heading into the 2025-26 season.

Darren Ferguson will be hoping that he can have his side challenging at the top end of the table next season. To do this, the Posh are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Braintree Town’s Kyrell Lisbie.

Lisbie has had an impressive first season at National League level and will undoubtedly be subject to interest from clubs higher up the pyramid this summer. It is no surprise that Peterborough are the side linked with Lisbie, given their history of signing talent from non-league clubs.

Who is Kyrell Lisbie?

Kyrell Lisbie is the son of former Charlton Athletic and Norwich City striker Kevin Lisbie. The 21-year-old started his career within the academies of West Ham United and Watford before playing in non-league for Woodford Town and Welling United.

Ahead of the 2023-24 season, the attacker joined Cray Valley Paper Mills and scored 29 goals in 44 appearances. He was a key member of the Millers’ side who faced Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup and scored against the League One side in the replay at the Artic Stadium.

Braintree swooped to secure his services at the beginning of the 2024-25 season. Despite the jump up four leagues, the former Watford academy product has been a consistent threat to National League opponents this season.

His performances have led to reports of Peterborough holding advanced talks with Braintree to sign Lisbie ahead of the 2025-26 season.

What could Kyrell Lisbie bring to Peterborough United?

Lisbie has had a great first season at National League level and would bring versatility to Peterborough’s attack. He can play either on the left of an attacking three or down the middle as the main striker.

The attacker provides a consistent threat for his side, having had an average of 1.5 shots, with 0.6 of these on target per game on average (stats provided by Sofascore). The 21-year-old’s brace on the final day against Rochdale allowed him to break the 20+ goal contributions mark for the season, 11 of which were goals, thus proving his ability in front of goal.

His ability and agility have allowed him to beat his opposition in 1v1 duels with a 78% success rate of dribbles attempted this season at an average of 1.9 per game. His ability to beat opposition defenders is shown further with an average of 5.4 duels won per match.

Lisbie also completes his defensive duties as a wide player. This season, he has completed an average of 2.1 ball recoveries per match and has been dribbled past only 0.5 times per game.

Should a move to Peterborough occur, his output will likely decrease with the higher quality of opposition faced. However, his performances and statistics from a debut season in the National League suggest that Lisbie has the capabilities to develop into an impressive player at League One level.

Would a move to Peterborough United be a good one for both parties?

Given his performances this season for Braintree, Lisbie is most likely to gain a move to the EFL this summer. The question will be what division and club is best for the 21-year-old.

Peterborough has a track record of signing and developing non-league talent within their recent history. From Posh’s current squad, Chris Conn-Clarke, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Ryan De Havilland have all played non-league within the past two years.

Considering the club’s track record, a move to London Road would be a smart choice for Lisbie. There is every chance that a move for the 21-year-old will see him loaned out to a League Two side next season to aid his development before a shot in League One with the Posh.

Lisbie’s climb up the English football pyramid could certainly excite Peterborough fans. The forward has jumped four divisions from the Isthmian League South East Division to the National League and continued to torment opposition defences.

With his young age and fast-tracked development, a move to Peterborough would be a smart choice for Lisbie. The move would be a good investment for the League One side as it would allow them to add another future star in the making to their squad ahead of the 2025-26 season.
