Championship Club Move Ahead of Rangers in Battle For 12-Goal League One Man

Peterborough United

Peterborough United star Kwame Poku has been attracting interest this summer with his contract set to expire this month after a campaign where he produced an incredible 20-goal contribution despite missing a portion of the campaign due to injury.

The 23-year-old has seen his stock continue to rise since joining the League One club in 2021 and will leave this summer with a return of 60 goal contributions in 147 appearances for Posh.

Poku Excels as Peterborough United Struggle

Despite re-investing a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the likes of Harrison Burrows and Ronnie Edwards, the exodus of talent at Peterborough United over the last few years was bound to catch up with the club.

The 2024/25 season was almost a disaster for a team that had become accustomed to competing for promotion from League One for much of the last decade. Posh finished just five points clear of the relegation zone after conceding an incredible 81 times in their 46 matches, and had not been for the form of their star man, they could have been preparing for life in League Two.

Poku scored some crucial goals and put in some match-winning displays to help the club afloat in the third tier. Despite playing just 27 times, Poku scored 12 goals and provided a further eight assists. His goal record is all the more impressive considering his tally came from an expected goals record of just under six.

The club’s number eleven ranked in the top two for successful dribbles, first for shots per game and third for key passes of all players in the squad throughout the campaign. His display in the 6-1 win over Cambridge United in November, where he scored a hat-trick, was a terrific watch.

It is these levels of performance that have made his signature a sought-after one this summer.

Rangers Face Competition For Deal For League One Star

Peterborough United’s poor campaign meant they were always unlikely to keep hold of the winger this summer, with his contract set to expire. However, it is still unclear where he will be playing this season, with conflicting reports about who will be successful in signing the player.

It had been reported that SPFL giants Rangers were set to beat Birmingham City to his signature, but Pete O’Rourke is now reporting that Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers are set to hijack the deal for the Ghana international.

Scottish Premiership side Rangers can offer Champions League Football this summer as they enter the qualifying rounds, but the opportunity to compete for a place in the Premier League may appeal to the former Colchester United winger. The two-time EFL trophy winner is attracting interest from several big-name clubs, and it appears the race to sign him may continue to rumble on for some time yet.
