Peterborough United are preparing to lose a star as a Championship club prepare for a bid in January.

Posh owner Daragh MacAnthony has been used to some of the side’s stars leaving the club, and he has never been against some of their biggest names departing, with players usually transfer listed by Peterborough when they enter the last year of their contract.

Another name has entered the frame to depart the League One outfit, with one of the side’s standout players entering the final year of his contract and the side resigned to his imminent departure. Championship clubs have been alerted to the situation, which could spark action in the winter.

Is Peterborough United star Championship bound?

Kwame Poku is another name from London Road who seems destined to leave the club again, whether next summer or in January; it appears to be all but written in the stars for the 23-year-old winger. Poku’s contract with the Posh runs out next summer, but clubs in the second tier are monitoring the situation and preparing to make a move in the winter transfer window.

According to Alan Nixon’s Patreon, Blackburn Rovers could be one club approaching to sign the Peterborough United star in January. However, there have been other clubs in the second tier linked with him in the past, including league leaders Sunderland.

The Lancashire-based side enjoyed a fantastic start to the season as they went undefeated in their opening seven games. It could perhaps have just been a new manager bounce after the appointment of former Birmingham City boss John Eustace, who had a point to prove in the Championship. Since then, the side has found form hard to come by, picking up just one win in their last five league games. Seeing the side in the playoff places comes as a surprise after they sold their star player Sammie Szmodics, who was a signing from Peterborough United. They would need someone to replace the goals the now Ipswich forward brought to the team, and it seems that Poku is the man they have identified for that role.

What would it take for Poku to stay at Peterborough United?

Speaking on his podcast “Hard Truth”, owner Daragh MacAnthony discussed the club’s stance on Poku’s future at London Road, claiming he wanted to see the 23-year-old win promotion with the club. That does not seem to be on the cards; they have missed out narrowly in the past two seasons on a return to the Championship, and perhaps that could be a factor in Poku’s desire to leave, frustration at falling short of the club’s goals.

This season, he has been one of the standouts, with the player labelled as one of the best in League One by the Posh owner. Poku is closing on last year’s numbers, bagging himself seven goals and four assists, but the unfortunate side is that the side has conceded the most goals in the third tier, leaving them sitting 13th in the table.

Peterborough are not shy of selling some of its biggest players or even losing them for nothing. They have played their role in producing some of football’s big names today, like Ivan Toney. Selling Poku would not have been an option in the summer when they sold Ronnie Edwards, as well as Ephram Mason-Clark completing his move to Coventry City.

The club appear relaxed from the comments made, and with the situation surrounding his age, a move in January would be unlikely. While it may seem to be their last chance to cash in on the player, his age means that the club would be owed compensation, something MacAnthony believes could still be in the millions.
