Peterborough United To Win Race For National League Star

Peterborough

Peterborough United are set to win the race to sign Altrincham playmaker Chris Conn-Clarke after a fee has been agreed between the two sides, as confirmed by journalist Alan Nixon.

The 22-year-old returned to Altrincham last summer from Fleetwood Town, quickly establishing himself as one of the division’s best players and won the 2023/24 Player of the Season in the National League.

However, a fee in the region of £350,000 has been agreed between the Non-League side and Peterborough United with the player closing in on a switch to the League One side.

How did Conn-Clarke fair last season?

Conn-Clarke made 46 league appearances for Altrincham last season as well as an additional appearance during the club’s play-off campaign.

During that time, the playmaker scored 23 goals and provided 12 assists for the football club, finishing the 2023/24 season as the highest goal provider within the National League.

In terms of his in-depth statistics, Conn-Clarke averaged 1.2 key passes per 90 minutes for Altrincham as well as 3.8 shots on goal and 4.5 successful dribbles within each match for Phil Parkinson’s side, proving to be a dangerous player in the final third for his side as they secured a top seven finish.

What will Conn-Clarke bring to Peterborough?

Peterborough have lost Ephron Mason-Clark to Championship side Coventry City, but have already secured the signing of Harrogate Town’s x on a permanent deal.

However, Conn-Clarke can operate as a left winger or as a number ten, which adds further versatility to the League One side’s attacking options next season.

He enjoys running with the ball and has excellent close-range control, making him a difficult player to take the ball off.

Will this move benefit Conn-Clarke’s development?

Conn-Clarke enjoyed an outstanding 2023/24 season with Altrincham, experiencing plenty of first-team minutes and he will be eager to continue that in League One if a move is signed.

Similarly, he would be joining a side that have enjoyed a proud history of developing players from the National League, with examples including Ephron Mason-Clark and Ronnie Edwards.

This will likely give Conn-Clark the confidence to join a club knowing he is going to feature within a competitive side that will be keen to go one better next season after achieving a play-off place last season.
