Plymouth Argyle Agree Deal For In-Demand Fleetwood Town Defender

League One club Plymouth Argyle has reached an agreement with Fleetwood Town for their heavily sought-after defender, Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu.

The 25-year-old has been the subject of major interest from various clubs already this summer, but according to Pete O’Rourke, the Pilgrims have met Fleetwood’s transfer demands and are set to announce his arrival imminently.

Wiredu has spent three seasons at Highbury and has become a central figure at the heart of the Cod Army’s defence.

Plymouth Argyle to Land Brendan Wiredu

It’s already been a tumultuous summer at Home Park, following Argyle’s relegation to League One. Having suffered various player exits, as well as a managerial change, Argyle are rebuilding ahead of their third-tier return.

Up until now, Plymouth has strengthened in the attacking areas with the aim to replace key figures such as Ryan Hardie, Mustapha Bundu, and Adam Randell. The Devon club has set their stall out early, already bringing in the likes of Jamie Patterson, Xavier Amaechi, and Caleb Watts.

With the news of a potential move for Ukrainian centre-back Maksym Talovierov circulating, it’s no surprise to see new boss Tom Cleverley targeting like-for-like replacements.

Brendan Wiredu could well be the next new man through the door at Home Park, a significant transfer breakthrough for Argyle. Various clubs, including Rotherham United, reportedly had bids turned down for the Englishman, with Alan Nixon maintaining that Fleetwood were always willing to sell for the right price.

Fleetwood Town Star Heading to Plymouth

Wiredu has featured 107 times during his three-year stay on the Lancashire coast. The Charlton Athletic Academy graduate quickly became a near ever-present for Fleetwood, his undoubted quality shining through whilst in League Two. He made 37 league appearances last season for Pete Wild’s team, chipping in with two goals from the back-line.

It was a major boost to Fleetwood that he remained with the club following their relegation from League One, helping them to stabilise with a 14th place finish last season. But a new challenge with the Green Army provides Wiredu with the opportunity to challenge himself in the third-tier once again.

Having begun his senior career as a midfielder, Wiredu has been transformed into one of the EFL’s most in-demand centre-backs during his spell at Fleetwood. His remarkable versatility is a key factor as to why so many clubs were eager to secure his services.

Having seemingly won the battle for his signature, Plymouth Argyle is set to secure an extremely shrewd defensive acquisition. Wiredu has become known for his excellent positioning, as well as possessing a natural instinct for defending, attributes that could prove crucial for a side hoping to challenge for promotion next season.

The arrival of Wiredu could be a decisive addition as Tom Cleverley seeks to guide Plymouth to an immediate return to the Championship.
