Plymouth Argyle are preparing for the new season, back in League One after relegation from the Championship last season. With a new manager at the helm and stories emerging over potential investment from Gareth Bale the club do not seem to be far away from the headlines this summer.
New boss Tom Cleverley will not have much time to assess his squad before having to make some decisions on incomings and outgoings as clubs continue to push to sign their targets.
Argyle have been reasonably busy for this stage of the transfer market, but after relegation will be hoping to keep hold of some of their star names as clubs from the second tier circle.
Bristol City Target Plymouth Argyle Star
One name on the shopping list of the clubs in the league above is star midfielder Adam Randell, who is reportedly in advanced talks to sign for Bristol City.
The 24-year-old has been a key player since progressing through the club’s academy making 173 senior appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists from the centre of the park.
He played a role in the club’s promotion from League One in 2023 to the Championship before going on to make 84 second tier appearances before relegation was confirmed.
Now according to Pete O’Rourke, he could be returning to the Championship quicker than expected.
Championship Drop Can Be Damaging to the Squad
Whilst the vast majority of clubs who find themselves dropping from the Championship into League One will have ambitions of an immediate return, one of the key issues they often face is to keep hold of their star players.
Football is a short career and many players would rather take the opportunity to make a quick return to the second tier with another club, than risk staying and potentially being stuck.
That gives clubs like Plymouth a huge problem, whether to keep hold of the players wanting to go or to try and sell them and replace them with quality.
