Plymouth Argyle Enter Chase For Player Of The Year Contender – Aberdeen Also Interested

Plymouth Argyle are set to have a five-way transfer battle with other League One rivals for Bromley standout Omar Sowunmi in the summer.

Tom Cleverley’s side have managed to recover from their torrid start to the season, in which they looked like prime relegation candidates, to put themselves within three points of the playoffs ahead of their showdown with fellow top-six chasers Reading.

However, planning towards next season is underway, and they look set to once again raid a League Two promotion contender for a second summer in a row after identifying a new leader for their defensive unit.

Sowunmi Battle Intensifies

According to Pete O’Rourke, Plymouth are set for a major battle with other sides across England and beyond to sign Bromley centre-back Omar Sowunmi, who is in with a chance at winning the League Two Player of the Season award.

His efforts for the Ravens have seen them challenge for the League Two title just two years removed from their first-ever promotion into the EFL, with Andy Woodman’s side holding a two-point advantage over MK Dons ahead of the weekend’s action.

The 30-year-old is in the best season of his career so far, guiding Bromley to 12 clean sheets this campaign and just 36 goals conceded, a record only bettered by three other teams in their division.

Sowunmi has been excelling at both the back and up front, with his six goals leading all defenders in the fourth tier this campaign, all of which came from some form of a set piece.

However, Plymouth are not alone in their chase for the former Sutton United man, with Bolton Wanderers and Barnsley also interested from League One, while Oxford United have been tipped with interest from the Championship.

Scottish side Aberdeen are also keen on a transfer for the defender, with the Pittodrie side under new leadership after poaching manager Stephen Robinson from league rivals St. Mirren.

Is A Move Away Wise?

As much as recent interest has intensified for Omar Sowunmi, Bromley may feel quietly confident about securing their star defender beyond the summer.

With some heavyweight clubs like Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley and Aberdeen all in the race, they will be able to offer a chance at higher-level football over the next few seasons if fortune goes their way, and in the latter’s case, even European football should the Dons be able to recover from a disappointing 2025/26.

However, with promotion looking very promising for Bromley this season, many of these moves may feel like a sideways step for the centre-back, and with how beloved he is at Hayes Lane, it may be worth sticking around to continue their impressive rise up the divisions.

His pace, defensive acumen, and goal threat from set-pieces at a time that they are becoming increasingly effective makes Sowunmi a prized asset for any suitors, but whether it is the correct choice to leave Ravens as they gear up for League One remains to be seen.
