Tom Cleverley has confirmed one of his Plymouth Argyle players will undergo a “straightforward abdominal procedure” after playing with the injury for some time.
The former Manchester United man’s team has a chance of finishing in the play-offs this season.
They are currently two points off Reading in 6th and are on a good run of four games unbeaten.
However, with eight games remaining, they are set to be without midfielder Brendan Wiredu.
Cleverley Confirms Wiredu Surgery
Speaking to the BBC, the Plymouth boss confirmed that Wiredu has been playing with an injury recently and will have surgery to fix it:
“He’s putting himself through everything.
“He can perform to a certain level, it’s just that top-end explosive movements that are causing him real pain.
“It’s a fairly straightforward abdominal procedure that he’ll have that will put him out for four weeks.”
Wiredu will miss Plymouth’s crucial clash with fellow League One play-off hopefuls, Huddersfield Town.
Along with his absence, Argyle will be without Herbie Kane, who is on loan from the Terriers and therefore ineligible for the clash.
How Has He Played This Season?
The 26-year-old has featured 32 times for Argyle in the league since joining from Fleetwood Town last summer. Of those 32 games, he has started 18 times, averaging 56 minutes per game, and received an average Sofascore rating of 6.74.
Creatively, he has registered just one assist this season, while creating three big chances in the league. Wirebu is also averaging 0.5 key passes per game in League One.
He has shown his defensive quality in games. The midfielder is averaging 0.9 interceptions per game, 1.2 tackles per game, 1.8 clearances per game, and recovered 2.3 balls per game. Wiredu has also only been dribbled past 0.3 times per game.
His best performance this season, according to Sofascore, came against Peterborough United back in September. Despite his side losing, he picked up a 9.1 rating in the game.
Wiredu played the 90 minutes and had nine defensive contributions in the game. Impressively, he won 11 of his 12 duels and four of his five tackles.
Although he has mainly been involved as a substitute this season, he will be missed as Plymouth aims to finish in the top six.
