Plymouth Argyle Move for League Two Defender

Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth Argyle are long-term admirers of Fleetwood Town defender Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu and are ready to make an approach for the 25-year-old despite rival clubs having had offers rejected.

The defender has been a standout for the Cod Army in his three seasons at the club and has become subject to a plethora of interest both this summer and the previous.

Fellow League One club Rotherham United have had an offer for the defender turned down; however, reports from Alan Nixon have stated that the Lancashire club would be willing to sell to Plymouth if their price demands are met.

Who is Brendan Wiredu?

A product of Charlton Athletic’s academy, Wiredu made a breakthrough in his career for Colchester United in 2020, before earning a move to Fleetwood Town in 2022.

Having come through as a midfielder, his time at Fleetwood have seen the Cod Army deploy the Englishman in central defence.

Able to operate in deep midfield or the heart of the defence, Wiredu is a constant presence on the pitch, capable of playing out from the back with composure.

Most recently, Wiredu has continued his standout performances for his club, making 37 appearances as the club finished 14th place in the division.

Amid Fleetwood Town’s relegation to League Two in 2024, it came as a large surprise to see the club maintain the defender’s services at the club, and the midfielder-turned-defender has been in rich demand from both League One and the Championship.

Plymouth Argyle Move for Brendan Wiredu

Recently suffering relegation from League One and losing head coach Miron Muslic to Schalke, Plymouth Argyle have placed Tom Cleverley in the hot seat to oversee a rebuild, with hopes to see the club secure an immediate return to the second tier.

Having lost star forward Ryan Hardie to Wrexham and most recently, Ghanian international Michael Baidoo who has departed for Qatari side Umm Salal, the club has been active in the transfer market.

With Caleb Watts, Jamie Paterson, and Jack Mackenzie amongst the names to make the move to Home Park, the Devonshire club have made a clear signal of intent to be in the promotion battle in League One next season.

A move for Brendan Wiredu would make sense, with the 25-year-old’s versatility being a vital asset as Plymouth look to fill gaps in both the defensive and midfield positions going into the 2025-26 campaign.

Wiredu’s commanding presence and versatility could be a vital asset for a club chasing promotion next season, and the former Colchester United man is at an age that still offers the potential to play further up the divisions.

It will be interesting to see if Plymouth Argyle are able to negotiate a price for Fleetwood Town’s prized asset, with the Lancashire club having previously stood strong amid suitors for the defender.
