Plymouth Argyle Negotiating Deal for Scottish Premiership Striker

Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth Argyle are reportedly dipping into the Scottish Premiership for their sixth signing ahead of their 2025-26 League One campaign.

The Pilgrims are said to be in talks with St Mirren to sign striker Owen Oseni. The 22 year old joined the Buddies in January on a three-and-a-half year deal but negotiations are reportedly taking place for Oseni to return to the English pyramid after six months north of the border.

Who is Owen Oseni?

Oseni started his career in his native Ireland, joining Waterford’s youth team at a young age. In 2022, the striker made his senior debut for the League of Ireland side and went on to make four appearances for the Blues.

A year later, the 22 year old moved to England and joined up with Derby County’s academy. After loan spells in non-league with Nuneaton Borough and Rushall Olympic, Oseni was released by the Championship side without making a first-team appearance.

The Irishman joined Gateshead ahead of the 2024-25 season but only lasted half a season with the Heed, joining Scottish side St Mirren at the start of 2025. Despite failing to find the back of the net for the Buddies, Oseni is reportedly subject to interest from Plymouth Argyle with negotiations ongoing for his transfer to Home Park.

What could Owen Oseni bring to Plymouth Argyle?

During his brief spell in the National League, Oseni was a consistent goal threat for Gateshead. The 22 year old scored 14 goals in all competitions for the North East side and had an average of 2.3 shots per game, with 1.3 of these on target per game.

Another attribute of Oseni’s that could be utilised by Plymouth is his 1v1 ability against opposition defenders. At Gateshead, the striker completed an average of 1.2 successful dribbles per 90 minutes on average with a 60% success rate and won an average of four duels per game as well.

These attributes were highlighted by Oseni himself when he signed for St Mirren in January:

“I feel like I can bring a lot of pace up front. I’m direct, I like to get in behind defenders and hopefully I can bring goals as well”.

Given his rapid rise through the pyramid, having played in the National League North two years ago, there is a determination and drive within Oseni to improve rapidly. The 22 year old is a well-built and robust forward who has significant ability to read the play to bring teammates into play.

Would Owen Oseni be a good addition for Plymouth Argyle?

Having been relegated to League One, Plymouth Argyle will be looking for an instant return to the Championship. With this in mind, the Pilgrims will need to recruit well this summer to compete at the top of the division.

Ryan Hardie has left the club to join Wrexham and Mustapha Bundu is set to leave Home Park as well, leaving the Devon side short in attacking areas. Completing the signing of Oseni would provide an option in attack for Cleverley’s side.

Oseni was part of a Gateshead side that was clear in their determination of a possession heavy style of play, shown by his pass success rate of 86%. This experience would align well with Tom Cleverley’s desire to control the game through possession and building of attacks from deep.

The question will be asked as to whether Oseni will make an impact at League One level. The 22 year old has not played EFL football during his career and did not make an impact in the Scottish Premiership, failing to score in 11 appearances for The Buddies.

It is likely that the reported interest in Oseni is for him to develop alongside other additions at Plymouth. Despite rising through non-league, the Irishman will likely require time to get up to speed with demands of League One football.

Oseni could be one to watch out for in the future should Plymouth Argyle finalise a deal for the St Mirren striker. For now, Tom Cleverley’s side should look to add additional options alongside Oseni ahead of the 2025-26 League One season.
