Portsmouth Closing In On Deal For Former Premier League Veteran

Portsmouth are reportedly close to securing the signing of former Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett after his contract expired earlier in the summer.

With many clubs having struggles throughout the window with signing players due to the demands their clubs place on them, the free agent market is still a very useful asset.

Many players have been released by top clubs this summer and a lot of these talented players still remain without a club.

As the transfer window nears its conclusion, the free agent market takes the time pressure off deals, as they can be signed after Friday’s deadline.

Portsmouth could be set to take advantage of this, with a former Newcastle stalwart set to make the move to the South Coast.

Dummett To Portsmouth?

According to TeamTalk, Portsmouth are set to secure the signing of former Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett, as the 32-year-old was a free agent after not being offered a new deal by Newcastle.

Dummett had been with the club for his entire career, with his release this summer ending a 23-year association with the Magpies.

However, with him only making 12 appearances across the last three seasons for Newcastle, the club decided it was time for the Welshman to move on.

Last season, he made just five Premier League appearances, with three appearances in the Cup alongside this.

His career at Newcastle saw him make 213 appearances for the Magpies as he became a cult hero at his boyhood club.

Despite his loyalties to the club throughout his career, this could be the perfect time for him to seek a new challenge away from the north-east.

Is Pompey The Right Choice?

With Portsmouth being recently promoted to the Championship, it could be the perfect club for Dummett to get consistent game time.

His experience at both the Premier League and Championship level is incredibly valuable to any club at this level, even more important to a club that is new to this level.

If he can stay in the starting eleven throughout the season, it could be a great move for both the club and the player, as he seeks a new adventure away from the Magpies.
