Portsmouth are set to face a blow in their pursuit of Brighton Hove Albion midfielder Marc Leonard as a trio of Championship sides have joined the race for his signature, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The talented midfielder is excelling in League One with Northampton Town and looks set to be the subject of a fierce transfer battle during the summer window.
Which clubs are interested in the midfielder?
According to Fabrizio Romano, Leonard has attracted the interest of Championship trio Swansea City, Preston North End and Plymouth Argyle, with his contract set to expire in June 2025, although the Premier League side holds a one-year option.
The midfielder has also attracted the interest of League One leaders Portsmouth whilst Mark Robins’ Coventry City were also linked with him during the January transfer window.
Why is Leonard in demand?
The 22-year-old has made 38 league appearances for the Cobblers so far this season, contributing to 11 goals and has an average match rating of 7.34, which places him as one of the division’s best midfielders this season.
Leonard impressed in League Two with Northampton Town, helping them to reach promotion before re-signing for the club on loan in the summer. He proved that he had what it took to impress in the third tier as well and a move into the Championship appears to be the next logical step in his development.
How could this news affect Portsmouth?
Currently, the transfer window is closed and focus from John Mousinho’s side is firmly on the League One title, but there will be cause for concern for the transfer team. This news is likely to force Portsmouth to look at other options, just in case they miss out on Leonard.
Due to the player’s contract status, there is a possibility that some sides would only consider permanent swoops for him, which could open the door for Portsmouth to loan him in to land him permanently at a later date.
