LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David is reportedly attracting interest from Italy, Spain, and England amid speculations surrounding his future, with the forward set to be available on a free transfer this summer.
According to a tweet from Matteo Moretto, David, 24, has reportedly decided not to renew his contract with the French side and is expected to leave when it expires at the end of the season. Multiple clubs from Italy and Spain are said to be interested in the Canadian forward, and a potential move to the Premier League is not being ruled out.
David joined Lille from Belgian side KAA Gent in 2020 and has scored 92 goals in 196 games for the Ligue 1 side. He has started the 2024/25 season brilliantly, scoring five goals in seven games in the league and has scored one goal in two games in the UEFA Champions League, scoring the decisive goal in Lille’s 1-0 win against Real Madrid. With David’s fine form in front of goal, a reportedly long list of admirers comes as no surprise.
Who are the reportedly interested clubs?
According to Moretto, the 24-year-old is not short of admirers. Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan are rumoured to be interested and actively working to secure the Canadian’s signature, with AC Milan being ruled out of the race. Additionally, Moretto reports that 27-time Spanish champions Barcelona are also closely monitoring David’s situation, with moves from Premier League clubs also expected within the coming months. It is also reported that, despite previous interest, Atletico Madrid are not among the favourites to sign David.
What would David bring to these sides?
To gain some insight into what the Lille forward could potentially bring to these sides, let’s take a look at his best performance of the season so far, Lille’s victory away at Le Havre. Bruno Génésio’s side came away from the game against the side famed for nurturing talent, such as Riyad Mahrez and Paul Pogba, as 3-0 victors, with David bagging himself a hat-trick for Les Douges.
Using stats provided by Fotmob, the Inter, Juventus and Barcelona target proved his ability in the box, scoring three from an expected goals (xG) of 1.44. Looking at his shot map, David managed to get seven shots off in the 18-yard box and had five shots on target whilst managing 14 touches in the opposition box, proving his ability to create shooting opportunities for himself in the box. Looking into the more creative aspects of the forward’s game, the 24-year-old created two chances throughout the match and boasted a pass completion rate of 91%.
It’s clear to see that whoever ends up winning the race for the Canadian’s signature is getting themselves a fantastic talent. At just 24 years old, David has a lot of time to develop even further and potentially put himself into that ‘world-class’ bracket. Signing a player with these sorts of numbers in front of goal on a free feels like a no-brainer, and in what could be described as a ‘low-risk, high-reward’ signing, David could prove to be vital for any team needing a goalscorer to propel them towards success.
