Sheffield United goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst has completed a permanent move to National League side Wealdstone, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s website.
The 22-year-old had previously spent his entire career with the Blades aside from several Non-League loan spells, which further aided his development although he has now found a permanent home back in the National League.
Dewhurst has had spells with the likes of Guiseley, Carlisle United, Scunthorpe United and Solihull Moors in recent campaigns, with the goalkeeper spending half of last season with the Irons (Scunthorpe).
Stuart Maynard’s side were left scrambling for a goalkeeper after League One side Bristol Rovers made the surprising decision to recall loanee Jed Ward despite a promising start to the campaign with Wealdstone.
However, providing paperwork and final approval is submitted on time, Dewhurst will feature between the sticks for Wealdstone this weekend as they face a difficult trip to FC Halifax Town.
At the time of publishing, Wealdstone occupied the final spot in the top half of the National League standings, after winning two of their previous three matches. Their only defeat came in a narrow 1-0 loss to title-chasing Solihull Moors, although a victory this weekend could take the club as high as ninth and within touching distance of the top seven.
It’s been a very busy week for Wealdstone with Jed Ward’s recall, Charles Clayden’s departure and the reveal of the club’s new stadium plans but whether they finish the week off on a high remains to be seen.
Upon signing for the club, Dewhurst told the club’s website…
“I’m delighted, it’s a chance to get my career back on track and hopefully help the club get back to where they want to be at the end of the season,
“I’ve spoken to the manager and he’s given me his visions for myself and the rest of the team.
“I like to think I’m good with the ball at my feet and every keeper has to be a good shot-stopper. Hopefully I can put all of those attributes into the game.”

After Jed Ward was surprisingly recalled by Bristol Rovers, it left a gaping hole in the squad which Stuart Maynard has filled very well, especially providing it was a free transfer on a permanent deal.
Following the stadium announcement, it appears as though work is being heavily guided towards the side’s long-term future which is why a permanent free agent is better than a loan star.
