Birmingham City are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Premier League midfielder Tommy Doyle from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Blues are reportedly close to signing Tommy Doyle from Wolves, with the 23-year-old set to have a medical at the Championship side soon.

Doyle will join Chris Davies’ Birmingham on a loan deal, with Wolves giving the green light to the midfielder joining their Midlands rivals to get game time.

This is according to Football Insider, who have also reported that the Blues view the midfielder as a key player in their attempt to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Doyle signed for Wolves on a permanent deal back in 2024 on a four year deal, keeping him contracted at the Molineux until 2028, with an option to extend it a further two years.

How did Doyle fare last season?

The 23-year-old could not make much of an impact for Wolves last season as he struggled for gametime and consistent minutes under both former manager Gary O’Neil and the Current manager Vitor Pereira.

Doyle struggled for gametime in the Premier League last season, making 24 appearances (three starts), picking up an assist and a yellow card.

It was a similar story for the midfielder in cup competitions, making only two appearances in the EFL Cup, captaining the side and scoring in a 3-2 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Overall, Doyle struggled for gametime last season for Wolves in all competitions, making only 26 appearances, scoring once and assisting once in 656 minutes of football.

Doyle set for Birmingham City medical.

According to Football Insider, Tommy Doyle is set for a medical at Birmingham City, signing for the Blues on loan from Wolves for the upcoming 2025/2026 Championship campaign.

Wolves have given the green light for the midfielder to join their West Midlands rivals after finalising the terms of the loan so Doyle could get regular game time.

It was also reported that the Blues see the 23-year-old as a key player in their attempt to reach the top flight of English football for the first time since 2011.

Would this be a good signing for Birmingham City?

Birmingham seem to be preparing for life in the Championship after their historic promotion last season, winning League One with 111 points.

Chris Davies’ side have already started these preparations, signing loanees Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Alfons Sampsted on permanent deals, as well as centre-back Phil Neumann on a free transfer. However, if the Blues want to push up the table and attempt to gain promotion at the first time of asking, they may need to strengthen their squad.

One player who could help strengthen the Blues midfield for the upcoming Championship season could be Tommy Doyle.

Doyle has previous experience in the Championship, making 52 appearances in the division across two different loan spells at Cardiff City and Sheffield United, scoring five goals, assisting seven, and gaining promotion with the Blades.

This experience in the second tier could be a valuable asset for Birmingham, as he has previous experience in the league, meaning it could be easier for him to adapt and hit the ground running. Additionally, he has experience in fighting for promotion.

Another valuable asset Doyle has is his ability on the ball; he demonstrated this during his time on loan at Sheffield United, showcasing his creativity and passing range. In the 2022/2023 Championship season, the midfielder averaged 1.70 key passes, 1.17 passes into the penalty area, and 5.68 progressive passes Per90.

This could be a very smart addition for Chris Davies’ side; signing Doyle could help strengthen the Blues midfield and bring in someone with promotion experience from the division; his passing ability and creativity in midfield can also make him a threat and someone who can bring in a few goals and assists for the side.

It will be interesting to see if Doyle can make an impact for Birmingham City under manager Chris Davies and if they can fight for promotion.
