Preston North End Midfielder Set For Free Transfer

Preston North End

Preston North End midfielder Ryan Ledson will leave the Championship side at the end of the season on a bosman, alerting rival clubs to his availability ahead of next season.

The midfielder has been with Preston since the summer of 2018 after arriving from fellow Championship side Oxford United on a free transfer but will now look for his fourth permanent club of his career.

No clubs have been directly mentioned as a potential destination for the 27-year-old, but he will be the subject of plenty of interest come the summer.

Ledson to leave Preston for free

Preston will lose Ledson on a free transfer, as confirmed by journalist Mike McGrath due to his contract status at Deepdale.

This departure will be a blow for the Championship side, especially considering the club have underperformed this season and are now facing the reality of losing another first-team regular.

With one league game remaining, Preston North End currently find themselves in deep relegation trouble knowing that a final day defeat matched with results elsewhere would result in their relegation to League One.

How has he fared this season?

Ledson has been a first-team regular for Preston North End ever since his arrival at the Championship side.

This season, Ledson has struggled with a couple of minor injuries but he has still managed to make 31 appearances across all competitions for Preston this season.

25 of those arrived in the Championship, where he contributed to two goals as well as scoring a vital goal in the EFL Cup against Premier League side Fulham.

Which clubs could be interested in signing Ledson?

With Ledson leaving on a free transfer, it opens the door to plenty of clubs that could be keen on signing the 27-year-old.

His former side (Oxford United) will confirm their safety this weekend if results go their way and they’ll be keen to add Championship experience in order to ensure they avoid another relegation battle next season.

If he wants to stay in the area, an obvious link would be to Ryan Lowe’s Wigan Athletic considering they are likely to be ambitious in League One next season and Ledson could be the centre point of that side.

Similarly, Portsmouth could be another ideal destination for the 27-year-old given they are also likely to be keen on ensuring they establish themselves in the Championship next season and beyond, rather than slipping into another bottom three battle.
