League OneThe 2025/26 League One season is still in its infancy. However several clubs have failed to impress so far despite showing promising signs before a ball was kicked.
Every club, with the exception of Burton Albion have played at least six games so far, which will start to provide an indication as to where clubs are at.
There was a huge amount of movement at the back end of the window which will likely provide some answers. However, the League One Lowdown hosts Callum and Sam have been hard at work deciding their own biggest disappointments.

4. Wycombe Wanderers
Wycombe Wanderers have been on a downwards trajectory for some time. In the first half of last season it looked as though they may be the club to battle Birmingham City for the title. But after losing Matt Bloomfield and some key players they dropped and failed to gain promotion.
Mike Dodds took over and has struggled to make a significant impact. This season has arguably started in much worse fashion than the last one ended.
They currently sit 19th, one point above the relegation zone at this early stage of the season.
Speaking on the Chairboys the hosts added:
‘They are a very data driven club’
‘What I will say on Mike Dodds, if you listen to his post match interview a couple of weeks ago.’
‘”There is no plan B we must make plan A better”‘
‘That is alarming’
‘As a manager you must have Plan A, you must have Plan B’
‘You have different profiles of players to be able to make changes in a game to suit the game’
3. Blackpool
Blackpool were expecting to kick on this season. The previous campaign had seen managerial change which resulted in Steve Bruce taking over. He somewhat steadied the ship and although there was no serious push for anything more than safe finish it was expected that the summer transfer window would free him to push on.
The former Premier League boss has serious pedigree in the game and an abundance of talent at his disposal. Yet so far something hasn’t clicked for the Seasiders. They sit 22nd, occupying one of the four relegation spots.
2. Plymouth Argyle
The only relegated Championship club to appear on this list. Plymouth Argyle sunk back into League One this season and had a busy summer. Former Watford manager and Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley was appointed as the new boss and it was felt by many that they had built a squad capable of at least challenging for promotion back to the second tier.
However, despite a recent corner turned thanks to their 4-2 defeat of a disappointing Stockport County, they find themselves closer to relegation than the play-offs.
They sit 18th in the table on six points, just two points above the drop zone.
They will be helping that the recent signings of Port Vale’s Tolaj can help push them back up the table.
“If they can sort their defensive issues out. The worst defence in the league, worse than Peterborough”
“They can score goals, there is no doubt about that. If they can sort out their issues they could be a real force”
“Tolaj has got off the mark which for any striker is big especially after a £1m+ move”
“Getting him off the mark and running will be huge”
1. Peterborough United
There is no doubt that on their day Peterborough United can beat anyone. Their superb recruitment, experienced boss and talented players have the ability to punch above their weight. But this season, after last year’s disaster they have struggled to get started.
Darragh MacAnthony has dipped into his pocket and has had to deal with several issues including injuries, players not wanting to play, star players leaving and more. They have the youngest squad in the league which is not unusual for the club, but something isn’t clicking.
‘They are frustrating. They are an incredibly well run club. They have the blueprint for success in this league and what it takes to sustainably run a club in this league.”
“There did appear from the outside to be panic towards transfer window day which is not something you would usually associate with Peterborough”
‘Some late signing with loans and experience coming in perhaps shows where they are at the moment.”
