Reading’s Femi Azeez has been linked with a January switch to Championship side Plymouth Argyle as the financial pressure continues to mount at the League One side, as confirmed by journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The 22-year-old has been one of the club’s standout performers so far this season, but could he be set to depart the League One side before the 11pm deadline?
Who is Femi Azeez?
The winger joined Reading in 2019 from National League side Wealdstone and has continued to rise through the League One side’s academy and into the first team.
After netting ten goals in 25 appearances for the U21s, Azeez was promoted to the men’s team and quickly established himself as a future star.
So far this season, the 22-year-old has made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing six additional assists in the process, supporting the likes of Harvey Knibbs and Sam Smith.
The latest exit is near…
It’s been a dismal month for Reading supporters so far, losing three key first-team players as well as a talented teenager – all without the manager’s knowledge.
Youngster Caylan Vickers is set to complete a permanent switch to Premier League side Brighton Hove Albion, whilst Tom Holmes (Luton Town), Tom McIntyre (Portsmouth) and Nelson Abbey (Olympiacos) have all also departed the club.
Facing the drop
Reading are currently facing a double relegation in back-to-back seasons unless they can miraculously turn their fortunes around before the end of the season.
Currently, the Royals are three points off safety in the bottom four of League One and have played two games more than the side directly above them.
Ruben Selles’ side travel to Oxford United on Saturday where they could be Femi Azeez-less if a deal with Plymouth gets over the line.
Writer’s View
Femi Azeez is one of this season’s breakout stars in League One and there should be a lot more Championship clubs taking an interest in him in my opinion.
However, Plymouth could be set for a very talented player within their ranks once again, especially after losing Finn Azaz earlier in the window.
