Rochdale have produced a major shock with news that they have released playmaker Tyrese Sinclair following the expiry of his contract, as confirmed via the club’s official website.
The 23-year-old has had an injury-hit season for Rochdale but has recovered in super style hitting double figures this season and will become a free agent this summer.
How has he faired this season?
Following Rochdale’s relegation last season as well as Sinclair’s loan success with Altrincham, there was a high anticipation that the playmaker would excel over the course of the 2023/24 campaign.
Despite having a three-month injury layoff, Sinclair managed 23 starts for the National League side, scoring 11 goals and providing two additional assists as Rochdale missed out on the play-offs and instead finished in mid-table.
Who else has been released?
In total, Rochdale have confirmed that four players have officially been released by the National League side ahead of the next season.
Alongside Sinclair, experienced midfielder Adam Clayton has been let go by Jimmy McNulty’s side, whilst Michael Afuye has also been let go.
Finally, defender Max Taylor has also been released after recently returning from his loan spell at National League rivals Solihull Moors after failing to break into the starting eleven since the club’s relegation to the fifth tier.
What’s next for Sinclair?
Although his release from Rochdale was a surprise, there are question marks as to whether he was released due to not being in the plans or whether the two parties decided to part ways so Sinclair could pursue a move elsewhere.
With the likes of Altrincham and Solihull Moors currently within the playoff places, there is a possibility that Sinclair could move to one of them if they gain promotion back into the EFL.
Meanwhile, National League sides like York, Oldham, Southend and soon-to-be Forest Green Rovers are likely to spend big in the summer and could be in a position to persuade a player like Sinclair to join their side this summer.
However, his next destination remains a complete mystery at this time.
