Sheffield Wednesday have contacted Premier League side Southampton about a possible loan move for defender Ronnie Edwards.
The 21-year-old joined the Saints in the 2024 summer transfer window but has struggled to get minutes for his new side. Since joining Southampton from Peterborough United, Edwards has played just 12 minutes in the Premier League and 86 minutes in the EFL Cup.
This lack of game time has led many to believe the young defender will be allowed to leave on loan in the winter transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday One Team Interested in Ronnie Edwards
Joe Crann at The Star reported that the Owls have enquired about Edwards ahead of the window opening.
It’s a deal that on the face of it would suit both clubs. Southampton will likely be keen to get Edwards more minutes and then reassess his position in the summer. Whilst Wednesday are likely to be using the loan market to improve their squad in January.
How Did He Perform Last Season?
Edwards had an impressive season in Peterborough United’s 2023/24 League One campaign. He played, started, and completed 45 out of 46 games – receiving a Sofascore average rating of 7.21.
Defensively, he helped the team keep 13 clean sheets and had zero errors leading to a goal in the league. Edwards had an average of one interception per game, 1.2 tackles per game, 5.6 balls recovered per game, and was dribbled past just 0.3 times per game.
Is Ronnie Edwards What Sheffield Wednesday Needs? – Opinion
For all their impressive attacking performances, the Owls have looked questionable defensively in the first half of the season. Despite that, at the time of writing, Danny Rohl’s side are 11th in the Championship, just four points off the play-offs. Rohl himself has admitted some smart additions in this window could help boost them up the table.
Edwards could certainly be one of those smart additions to the squad. He’s a left-sided defender who could play left wing back or left centre back in a five or left back in a four.
Wednesday fans in recent weeks have seen Rohl swap and change in-game between a five and four at the back. Having Edwards on the field would allow Rohl to do that more freely while adding more competition for the likes of Max Lowe and Marvin Johnson.
