Rooney Gives Ominous Foreshadowing of His Plymouth Argyle Future

Plymouth Argyle has been in a nightmare season this year as they currently reside at the bottom of the table. This certainly was not what Plymouth Argyle fans envisioned after a close shave with relegation last season led to a change in leadership in the dugout.

Wayne Rooney came into the job as Plymouth Argyle manager with a somewhat unsuccessful record at his previous stops. With the recent 2-0 defeat to Oxford United on Sunday, there are many questions as to the club’s future.

Rooney’s Argyle

Wayne Rooney, having been at clubs such as D.C. United and Derby County, Rooney obtained the Birmingham City job last season after the club sacked John Eustace. He promised “no-fear-football” to the Birmingham City fans, but all it brought about was a 2-4-9 record during Rooney’s time at Birmingham City.

Since he arrived at Home Park, Rooney has brought a more moneyball approach to the club with a hint of his approach from Birmingham City. He prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation that is aggressive and “nasty” as he puts it. Rooney wants to counter-attack the opposition. Unfortunately for him, because his style is so aggressive, the formation, which turns into a 2-3-5 while on defense, leaves his side exposed to a counter-attack itself.

Wayne Rooney on His Way Out?

Because of these flaws, Plymouth has been a very poor defensive side, as they have conceded a league-worst 29 goals as of Sunday. A 4-6-12 record also brings into question the job security of Wayne Rooney. Rooney himself seemed very aware of the possibility after Plymouth’s previously mentioned 2-0 loss at Oxford United, as he indicated his getting sacked was “normal” for people to ask due to the club’s recent poor form.

Simon Hallett, the Plymouth Argyle chairman, has a huge decision to make if he desires to stave off relegation for a club with already limited financial resources. The winter transfer window may not have the kind of talent that could save the club. With so many needs, and yet so little time, Hallett and Plymouth have come to a major crossroads in their season.

It is certainly a tenuous time for Wayne Rooney. He needs results, and he needs them fast. However, that kind of result currently feels far off. It might require a shift in tactics and that feels like a move Rooney would be incredibly reluctant to make. Whatever happens, unless dramatic changes happen, ominous days loom ahead for Plymouth Argyle
