Rotherham United Boss Coy On January Transfer Rumour

Matt Hamshaw has remained tight-lipped as to whether Tom Holmes will play for Rotherham United again amid speculation around his future.

The Millers secured the defender on loan from Luton Town in the summer for the entire season, but he has had a stop-start beginning to his time in South Yorkshire after a two-month injury layoff.

Holmes Exit Looms

However, Holmes could likely be on his way out in the coming days, with errors blighting his recent form, which culminated in the 25-year-old missing out on the matchday squad that faced Blackpool last night.

Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser about his future, Hamshaw gave short answers, such as “All will be revealed,” and “We’ll see” as to whether Holmes will remain at the New York Stadium.

United hold onto a clause in his loan deal which can send the defender back to Luton as the new year begins, with the Advertiser believing that this option has been exercised and an announcement will be made in the near future.

The news comes at arguably a bad time for the Millers, with fellow centre-back Jamal Baptiste being sent off in the loss at Bloomfield Road, albeit with the club set to appeal that decision, which would have seen him miss three games.

Other Decisions To Be Made

Holmes’ future is not the only one to be decided in the coming days by Hamshaw and the recruitment team at Rotherham, with other loanees such as Kion Etete and Dan Gore also having recall clauses.

While the decision is out of their hands, the Millers are hopeful that Manchester United’s Dan Gore will remain come the end of the window, while previous comments from the 43-year-old manager have suggested that Etete and fellow forward Martin Sherif are also on their way out.

Crucial January Window Ahead

With Rotherham United lingering in the bottom four, Matt Hamshaw has a massive job on his hands to reverse his side’s fortunes in 2026. Availability of players has been a big issue for him, meaning that regularly injured players, such as Kion Etete, are certain to leave.

The Millers thankfully are not out of touch in the League One table, with just three points separating ninth-placed Wycombe Wanderers and 21st-placed Plymouth Argyle, who are just two points ahead of Rotherham.

Getting more balance around the squad is key to success going forward, with only bottom-placed Port Vale scoring fewer goals than Hamshaw’s side. But no matter who is signed, fans will need to see progress made or the discontent surrounding the club will only continue to grow.
