Rotherham United manager Steve Evans has made a pledge to fans ahead of the SkyBet League One season.
The Millers boss has told the Rotherham Advertiser that he will pay for 7,001st season ticket sold by the club, while also putting money behind the bar for the season opener.
Following in Viktor Johansson’s Footsteps:
Swedish goalkeeper Viktor Johansson left Rotherham United at the end of last season. As a parting gift to supporters he paid for 600 pints at the Cutlers’ Arms pub, near to the AESSEAL New York Stadium, on the final day of the campaign.
Former Stevenage gaffer Steve Evans has pledged to match the ‘keeper’s gesture, putting his hand in his pocket if the club hits 7,000 season ticket sales before the season curtain-raiser on August 10.
He went one further than the departed shot-stopper as well, committing to paying for season ticket number 7001, should the club sell that many.
Rotherham United Readying for League One Season:
The Millers are preparing for another season back in the third tier, after suffering a crushing and convincing relegation last term.
More than 6,500 season tickets have been sold by Rotherham United ahead of the campaign, with the club seemingly keen to push the total past the 7,000 mark. Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser, Steve Evans said he loved the club’s supporters, adding that it was a “pleasure” to reward them.
Rotherham are one of the promotion favourites for the upcoming season, after adding the likes of Sean Raggett, Joe Rafferty and Jonson Clarke-Harris to their side from 2023/24.
A Great Gesture – Opinion:
Steve Evans often gets a lot of stick from rival supporters. However, this is a great gesture from him.
Fans are the cog that any and all football club could not work without, and it is always a lovely moment when managers and players acknowledge that. Johansson’s gesture at the end of his Rotherham United tenure was a fitting one, and so is this from the returning, cult-hero, manager.
