League One strugglers Cambridge United made the decision to part company with former Premier League boss Garry Monk earlier today with the side bottom of the table.
Cambridge find themselves deep in a relegation battle eight points from safety and 19th in the form table. Only Peterborough United of the bottom six clubs in worse form than them.
In the club’s statement they indicated that they were focussed on trying to preserve their League One status with just 15 games remaining.
“There are 15 games of this season remaining, and we must continue to fight together to preserve our League One status over the coming weeks.
“At the same time, we will use this period to plan strategically for the next chapter of the Football Club. We will say more about this in the week.”
Whoever does come in will need to make an immediate impact if they are to meet their aims.
Who is the early favourite as the next Cambridge United Manager?
Currently former manager Mark Bonner is the favourite to return to the club, just a month after being sacked by League Two side Gillingham.
The former Gills man lead Cambridge to promotion to League One, coming runner up in the 2020/21 season.
However, after signing a new long-term contract with the club in 2023, he was sacked just two months later after a 3-0 defeat to Lincoln City.
Other favourites are former Millwall man Neil Harris, former Northampton Town manager Jon Brady, Leam Richardson and Ian Evatt amongst others.
Whoever does come in will likely have to start preparing for next season in League Two. The chances of survival low at best.
Bonner does have history with the club so could arguably slot in quicker.
But having been sacked at Gillingham recently his stock is perhaps lower than it was a few months ago.
