Notts County director of football Richard Montague has stated that key players could be sold this January to fund their promotion bid.

The Magpies are in a solid position as they look to win promotion from League Two, but slipped out of the automatic positions this weekend with dropped points against league leaders Walsall, allowing Bromley to jump into 3rd place.

Jatta And Dennis Could Be Sold If Needed

Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham ahead of the January transfer window, County director Richard Montague fielded questions about the club’s plans, including on Alasanna Jatta and Matthew Dennis, who both are expected to be targets for other clubs.

“In an ideal world we keep them, but it’s also a reality for every club that if you receive a bid that far exceeds your valuation of a player then fair enough, and that player moves on them and you reinvest that money and try and get stronger.”

“There could be a situation where two incredible offers come in for those players and then it makes sense for the club to wish them well and move them on.

“If we thought that there was an opportunity to increase our promotion chance, we wouldn’t rule anything out.”

The pair lead the scoring charts for Notts County this season, with Dennis on 10 goals, with Jatta behind him on eight. The Gambian has 32 goals in League Two since arriving at Meadow Lane from Denmark and was the top scorer for Stuart Maynard’s side last season.

Dennis arrived as a free agent after his brief stint at Carlisle United and served as an excellent substitute up front to Jatta as he suffered from back problems, which stunted his start to the campaign.

Could Jatta Leave This Window?

With his performances being outstanding regularly, it is very understandable why Alasanna Jatta will be in demand this window. Interest has stemmed as far back as 12 months ago, when County turned down offers for the striker.

Now, with his output as strong as ever, it will be expected that clubs in the divisions above will try and lure the Gambian away from Notts County. Whether the clubs offer a suitable fee will likely determine his fate, but a sale is definitely on the cards.

Whether County can afford to lose both him and Matthew Dennis is another matter, as selling both of their best attacking players will certainly be a hindrance in their automatic promotion hopes. Options available in the market will be another major factor, with the aerial ability of Jatta being very hard to replace.
