A new chief executive officer (CEO) has been appointed by Scunthorpe United.
The Iron have announced the arrival of Matt Roberts, who has spent more than two decades reporting on some of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Who is Scunthorpe United’s New CEO?
Roberts has worked for a number of the globe’s most well-known broadcasters. The Englishman has spent time at the BBC, ITV, Eurosport and Discovery+ over the course of his sport reporting career.
He has hosted coverage of the Olympic Games, NFL Super Bowl, and the MotoGP World Championship, which he is perhaps best known for. Roberts has also reported for Football Focus and Match of the Day during his distinguished career.
Scunthorpe United noted in their statement that he has a Masters degree in Sports Directorship, which he completed at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2022.
Roberts has gained further qualifications, while growing his experience in consultancy and advisory roles over recent years.
Scunthorpe United In the Midst of an “Exciting Time”:
In a post on the Scunthorpe United club website, Matt Roberts said: “I am very proud to be joining Scunthorpe United at such an exciting time in the long history of the club.
“What has been achieved here over the past 12 months by Michelle, Ian, George and Roj – not to mention the fans, sponsors, and the local business community – is truly inspiring and now the challenge is to embrace the Iron spirit that runs through this town and build a new era of success.
On the field, the Iron sit top of the National League North, having narrowly missed out on promotion via the play-offs last term.
Under manager Andy Butler, who formerly led Doncaster Rovers in a caretaker capacity, Scunthorpe are seemingly once again heading in the right direction after a rotten period at the club.
The club’s chair and co-owner Michelle Harness added: “Matt brings a wealth of experience through his past work, his studies and his consultancy roles within football clubs, and we’re really excited to be embarking on the next chapter of our history as we continue our milestone year.”
Another Step in the Right Direction – Opinion:
The appointment of Matt Roberts, a sports broadcaster who has real experience and qualifications in the sport executive world, is a great move.
Roberts certainly appears to be a great candidate for the CEO role at Scunthorpe United, and will add more knowledge and a different set of eyes to the club’s higher-ups.
The mood music is good on the field for Scunthorpe, and additions like this behind the scenes helps to prove that the feelings off the pitch are positive too.
