Serie A side U.S. Lecce had an offer rejected on Deadline Day for a huge League One prospect. The Italian side approached Reading about loaning one of their youngsters, which the club swiftly turned down.
On the final day of the transfer window, Reading received an offer for youngster Tyler Sackey. However, the club turned down the offer from Lecce, seeing Sackey as a player who could break into the first team this season.
Sackey has already made five appearances for the Royals, scoring twice and assisting another. He is yet to make his League One debut; however, the club see him as a player who will regularly appear as a senior player in the future.
Reading rejected Deadline Day loan offer from Lecce
Despite having quite a few sketchy years, Reading’s dismal days under the ownership of Dai Yongge are finally over. The club were under a transfer embargo from 2021 till May this year, when Redwood Holdings Limited finally acquired them.
Under the embargo, Reading could not sign new players, and their financial issues meant that they struggled to keep their star players. Following the new ownership, however, the club has been given a new lease of life, and have seen twelve players join the club this summer.
In addition to seeing new players arrive, the club have managed to hold onto their key assets. One of whom is 18-year-old central midfielder Tyler Sackey. Football Insider have reported that, on Deadline Day, Reading turned down an offer from Serie A side Lecce for the youngster.
Sackey has made just five first-team appearances, including four in the Vertu Trophy and one in the FA Cup. Despite still waiting to make a League One appearance, both the club and player are hopeful that he can contribute to the club’s mission of steadying the proverbial ship.
Reading’s ultimate aim over the next few years will be to reestablish itself as a Championship side. With the side currently sitting in 20th with five points from their opening six matches, that aim still looks quite a far away.
Other clubs are interested in Tyler Sackey
Lecce were not the only side interested in Tyler Sackey, with Reading being forced to turn down interest from multiple clubs. While a permanent offer may have been tempting for the Royals, a loan would have also practically been the end of his time at the Madejski Stadium.
Sackey’s contract with Reading expires next year, and scouts will be monitoring his progress closely. Despite the downfall of the club since 2021, the club has an excellent history in terms of academy players, with players such as Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze once being a part of the club’s youth setup.
Tyler Sackey may be eyeing the careers of other Reading players who have either moved to larger academies or who have gone on to play in Europe’s largest leagues. At the end of the current season, the destination will be in his own hands.
