Galway United are the only side that remain unbeaten in the League of Ireland Premier Division but will put that record on the line against a Shamrock Rovers team they have not beaten since 2006.

The Hoops have incredibly not tasted defeat in this fixture for 20 matches but face a team that have lost just twice on home soil since April 2024.

Rovers are now unbeaten in three matches after picking up just one point from a potential nine to start the campaign, potentially due to their continued participation in the UEFA Conference League.

Galway United Increase Goal Threat to Add to Defensive Solidity

The Tribesmen have continued to prove hard to beat and break down in 2025 after impressing in their first season back in the top flight in 2024.

They have kept clean sheets in the last two games with a Michael Duffy penalty the only goal they have conceded in three matches.

It is now just one defeat in 14 Premier Division outings. The emergence of Moses Dyer in attack has strengthened their goalscoring prowess, an improvement in the one area that hindered them from competing for Europe in the run-in last season.

John Caulfield has set his team up in a similar vein to that of last season with little movement in their average shots on target, accurate passes and possession statistics over the opening seven matches.

They rank towards the bottom of the division for attacking metrics but have attempted to play higher up the pitch.

They are difficult to break down and have greater goal threat, with Dyer joining Stephen Walsh in the attack as part of a front two.

Vincent Borden and Patrick Hickey are capable of chipping in from midfield, with the former finally adjusting to life in the Premier Division, having scored just once in 2024. The 26-year-old hit double figures in the First Division in the title-winning campaign in 2023.

Shamrock Rovers Yet To Reach Their Best Level

The Hoops have a plethora of stars in their starting line-up, and the introduction of Graham Burke into their starting line-up has seen results improve.

However, they may lack a natural goalscorer as number nine Aaron Greene may struggle to reach double figures. Burke is technically excellent on the ball but will work better with a poacher in attack.

35-year-old Greene is an adequate squad option but is not the forward that will lead Stephen Bradley’s team to retain the league title.

Michael Noonan has the potential to become a key figure in the team, but the 16-year-old will need time to settle into regular football at this level.

Dylan Watts and Matthew Healy are the best midfield duo in the country. They will likely dominate possession against Galway United, and both players have the creativity to unlock what will be a stubborn defense.

Jack Byrne’s return to fitness is another major boost for a side that has yet to reach its very best level.

The improvement in results and the re-introduction of key players ensures it is surely just a matter of time before Shamrock Rovers embark on a run that puts them in touch with the teams at the top of the table.

Tribesmen v Hoops – Defence v Attack?

If there was ever a time for Galway United to end their horrible record against Shamrock Rovers, it may have been before the return to fitness of the Hoops’ key players.

The manager has confirmed that Danny Mandroiu is available, with just Ed McGinty missing following his red card against Derry City last time out.

The Tribesmen have tried to play further forward this season but retreated while being pushed back by a wave of attacks from Bohemians last time out.

The 2-0 win indicated that their greatest strength is in sitting deeper, but they may not be able to keep out the Hoops, who should get a result here to continue their long unbeaten run in this fixture.
