Sheffield United are believed to be making a late window attempt to sign Bournemouth defender, Chris Mepham, with the defender willing to move.
Both Leeds United and Celtic have previously been linked to signing Mepham earlier this summer.
Sheffield United have been interested in Mepham since January
Although Sheffield United’s move may seem like late desperation in the window’s final day, Chris Wilder’s side have been rumoured to be interested in the Welsh international since January 2024.
There wasn’t a shortage of interest in the 26-year-old defender back in January however with the Blades’ Yorkshire rivals, Leeds United, also interested in signing Mepham in the winter transfer window.
Even Scottish champions, Celtic, held an interest in the Premier League centre-back this summer with a fee of £8 million being touted by the Daily Mail.
Blades have seemingly held their nerve over approaching Bournemouth about signing Chris Mepham with Chris Wilder’s side now lining up a deadline day approach for the out-of-favour Premier League defender.
The Blades are making a late swoop for Mepham
According to Alan Nixon (paywall) Sheffield United are now starting to push through a last-minute deal to sign Bournemouth defender, Chris Mepham.
It’s believed that Mepham would be willing to take the step down from the Premier League to the Championship in order to earn more game time than the mere 613 minutes that Adoni Iraola handed the Welshman last season.
Chris Wilder is keen on the 26-year-old who could reunite with Welsh compatriot and former Bournemouth teammate, Kieffer Moore, who was one of Wilder’s first signings in a window of change for the Blades.
Mepham could replace Trusty
Any move for Mepham is likely to hinge upon the prospective sale of American defender, Aaron Trusty, who has been subject to a £5.5 million bid from Celtic according to Football Insider.
Brendan Rodgers’ side initially bid £5 million for the Sheffield United centre-back, although that opening offer was declined by the Blades with it remaining to be seen whether the extra £500,000 offered by Celtic can tempt Sheffield United into sanctioning a sale.
The fee received for Trusty is expected to immediately be invested into securing Premier League experience in the form of Chris Mepham, as per Alan Nixon.
