Sheffield Wednesday Battle League One Sides for Premier League Striker

Sheffield Wednesday are set to battle with two League One clubs and sides abroad for the loan signing of a Premier League forward.

The Owls are having a torrid time this season. They are set for relegation to League One and have a squad filled with inexperienced young players sprinkled with a handful of experienced players.

They are currently under a transfer embargo, which only allows additions approved by the EFL.

One potential new signing, if approved by the league, could be young forward Rory Wilson from Aston Villa. However, the South Yorkshire side aren’t the only team interested in him.

Sheffield Wednesday Want Rory Wilson

Journalist Pete O’Rourke shared that Sheffield Wednesday are one of several teams interested in signing Wilson on loan.

Henrik Pedersen’s side are in competition with League One sides Stevenage and Wycombe for his signature. O’Rourke also shared that several clubs abroad are interested in loaning Wilson.

Wilson Firing at Youth Level

Although the 19-year-old Scot has yet to experience much first-team action, he has been scoring goals at the youth level.

In the UEFA Youth League, he has been in fine form. In four games, he has five goals (2.5 goals per game).

His best game came in November against KF Skenderbeu U19s. Wilson scored three goals in Aston Villa U19s’ 6-0 victory.

Where Will Wilson End Up?

As previously mentioned, Wednesday are under strict guidelines from the EFL about whom they can sign. They aren’t allowed to pay any fees for players, and the vast majority of the loan costs need to be covered to pay the parent club.

This could be a stumbling block for a move. Villa might opt to send him to a club that can cover at least some of his wages.

Pedersen’s side aren’t blessed with a wealth of players at the moment. If Wilson moves to the Owls, he could be playing regular minutes in the Championship, even if it is for a struggling side.

Wycombe and Stevenage are both likely attractive prospects for the young man. They are both challenging for the play-offs in League One.

Wilson could be the missing piece of the jigsaw for both and could help fire them into the top six.

Aston Villa and the player himself will need to carefully decide where he ends up, to ensure he gets the best out of the short spell away from Villa Park.
