Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday could be set to miss out on the signing of free agent attacker Duncan Watmore to lower league opposition.
The forward is currently training with the Owls, following a brief stint with League One title chasers Stockport County, but now finds himself at the Championship strugglers.
However, a proposed move to the club could be about to collapse entirely, as fresh interest in the former Sunderland man has emerged.
Watmore’s possible Sheffield Wednesday snub
As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Duncan Watmore is attracting interest from League One side Rotherham United ahead of a potential move.
Watmore is with Sheffield Wednesday currently and the Owls have permission to sign another free agent, following a series of injuries within the camp and their already limited squad.
However, the club are yet to offer Watmore a contract and he could be tempted to walk away from the Championship side with the Millers already lodging a proposal to his representatives.
Earlier this month it was reported that Watmore was waiting on a call to join the Championship side.
How did he fare last season?
Watmore ended his three-year stint with Millwall during the summer following the expiry of his contract at the Championship play-off chasers.
The 31-year-old featured 29 times for Neil Harris’ side last season, contributing to six goals across all competitions, which bettered his tally from the previous campaign.
He joined Millwall back in 2022 after leaving fellow Championship side Middlesbrough and proved that he still has what it takes to perform well in the second tier.
What effect could the steal have on both clubs?
Sheffield Wednesday remain rock bottom of the table following their points deduction and after they were heavily beaten by neighbours Sheffield United on Sunday.
They now find themselves 18 points off safety as the division approaches the mid-way point of the season. The addition of a proven Championship goalscorer would improve their quality and numbers in the final third for sure.
As for Rotherham, they are 11th in League One after drawing with Reading on Saturday, but due to the tightness of the division they are just four points off the play-off places.
Watmore has consistent proved himself in the second tier, so dropping down a division and being the main man could allow him to hit double figures for the first time in three season’s and increase the Millers’ promotion hopes at the same time.
