Sheffield Wednesday have made contact with French side Brest, about a potential loan move for Karamoko Dembélé, according to The Star.

The Owls are interested in bringing in the once-highly-tipped Celtic youth academy player as they prepare for Danny Rohl’s first full season in charge after confirming their Championship status on the final day.

Dembélé spent the 2023/24 season on loan at League One club Blackpool. The 21-year-old showed his qualities for Blackpool, but ultimately couldn’t help them to promotion.

How did Dembélé fair last season?

In League One last season, Dembélé had 21 goal contributions – eight goals and 13 assists. He was Blackpool’s top assister and second top scorer, behind loanee Jordan Rhodes who has since returned to Huddersfield.

According to WhoScored, Dembélé was the top performer for the club. He had an average rating of 7.08 this season. Dembélé also produced the most key passes throughout the season, finishing with an average of two a game, and most dribbles, averaging 1.3 per game.

How has Dembélé’s career been to date?

Most football fans will remember Dembélé for making his Celtic under-20 debut aged just 13. He went on to sign a professional contract at Celtic aged 15. Although there were big expectations for Dembélé, he went on to play just ten times for Celtic before departing.

In 2022, Dembélé joined French side Brest on a free transfer, signing a four-year deal with the Ligue 1 side. Since joining the club, he’s played 18 times as he struggled to cement a place in the squad.

The move to Blackpool last summer on loan was a breath of fresh air for the winger, once seemingly destined for the very top of the game.

How likely is Dembélé to leave on loan again next season?

The Star stated that it’s unclear yet whether Dembélé’s parent club Brest, will allow Dembélé to leave on loan next season.

The French side smashed all expectations last season by finishing third in Ligue 1, meaning they’ll be in the Champions League for the first time in their history next season.

With the Champions League now added to their schedule, Brest might be keen to make sure their squad has the depth to cope with the fitness demands. That depth could include Dembélé, which could hamper a potential move to Sheffield Wednesday.
