Shrewsbury Town are reportedly keen to sign Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Toby Savin on a free transfer this summer, according to the Shropshire Star.
The 23-year-old began the campaign in fine form for Accrington Stanley in League Two but suffered a shoulder injury which saw him miss the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign and now faces an uncertain future.
How did he fair for Accrington?
Savin is a product of the Accrington Stanley youth setup and has spent his entire career with the club aside from a brief loan stint with Stevenage in February 2023.
During the 2023/24 campaign, Savin began as the clubs number, making ten appearances in all competitions for the club, keeping one clean sheet in the process. However, Savin suffered a shoulder injury during a match against Tranmere Rovers and didn’t play again for the remainder of the season.
Do Shrewsbury need a goalkeeper?
According to a report from the Shropshire Star, Shrewsbury Town are looking for two new goalkeepers this summer, with Savin one of several players currently on the club’s shortlist.
Second-choice goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne has been released by the League One side whilst Marko Marosi is out of contract at Shrewsbury and is currently in talks over the possibility of a new deal.
However, with Shrewsbury targeting two goalkeepers, there is a suggestion that Marosi may not be at the football club next season.
Would a deal be a good thing for Savin’s Development?
Savin has the opportunity to be part of a new looked goalkeeping department at the League One side, which could prove to be an opportunity that is too difficult to turn down.
Similarly, he would be moving into a higher division and would have fresh competition for a starting position with the club, which could boost his morale and allow him to perform at his best.
This would only make him a better player but on the flip side, there is a risk that he could suffer a drop in first-team football, which is something he would have to consider before making the move or remaining where he is.
