Sligo Rovers lifted themselves off the bottom of the Premier Division table with a win over Waterford last time out, and they have now furthered their survival chances with the news that an impressive new signing is set to join the club on the 1st of July.
The League of Ireland side have won just four of their 19 matches and are in need of quality additions this summer to stay ahead of Cork City in the battle to beat the drop.
Midfield Remains Problem Area For Russell
The departure of captain Niall Morahan continues to be felt in the heart of this Sligo Rovers midfield, as his ability to pick a pass and move the ball forward has not been replaced this season.
Jake Doyle-Hayes has not wanted for effort in a deep midfield role but has not reached the same levels as Morahan, who has moved on to title challengers Bohemians. The Deck had identified this issue in April in a piece highlighting the problems at Sligo Rovers after a difficult start.
However, John Russell and the management team may have found a solution with the announcement of a new arrival this summer.
Sligo Rovers Announce Deal For Accrington Stanley Man
The club have officially confirmed on their website that Seb Quirk has signed a one-and-a-half-year deal at the Showgrounds. The former Everton academy prospect played 43 times in total for Accrington Stanley and helped the team to avoid relegation to the National League last season, starring in a crucial win over MK Dons in March.
Quirk is versatile and has played in a multitude of positions, but his passing ability and defensive attributes make him appear to be a key candidate to step into the centre of midfield and tighten up a team that has conceded the most amount of goals in the League of Ireland Premier Division.
The 23-year-old is confident on the right but may find his route to that position blocked by the emergence of Owen Elding this season.
Quirk is also comfortable at left-back, but again, one of Rovers’ star players, fan favourite Reece Hutchinson, is a fixture there.
All the signs point to this being an addition to the midfield area that is lacking depth and quality. Sligo Rovers face Drogheda United this weekend before hosting rivals Galway United on Monday. They end June with a trip to Bohemians, and then their new arrival will be available for selection.
