Southampton, who have recently been relegated to the Championship, are reportedly preparing a fresh transfer bid for Middlesbrough star Finn Azaz.
The Saints have been chasing the Irishman for some time now, having seen a bid already rejected by Middlesbrough. Azaz is thought to be “keen” on the move to the South Coast.
Southampton Bid For Azaz
According to Football League World, Southampton are preparing a new bid to sign Middlesbrough ace Finn Azaz.
The new bid is thought to be worth £12 million, above the minimum valuation of £10 million set by the Boro. Azaz is keen to make the switch to the Saints, as they aim to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
It was a dismal 2024/2025 season on the South Coast. Southampton came dangerously close to beating Derby County‘s record lowest for the points tally in a Premier League season.
With new manager Will Still at the helm, the St Mary’s outfit are aiming to be in the top two come May.
Azaz joined Middlesbrough back in January 2024, for a reported £2 million from Premier League Aston Villa. Middlesbrough will therefore be making a hefty profit on the talented attacking midfielder if the Southampton move materialises before next week’s deadline.
Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards only handed Azaz his first start of the season last Saturday due to all the transfer speculation. The 24-year-old opened his account as Boro continued their 100% record with a two-one win away at Norwich City.
How Did Azaz Fare Last Season?
Azaz established himself as a Championship standout last season, with 12 goals and 11 assists in a Middlesbrough side that missed out on the play-offs. As a result, manager Michael Carrick was sacked and Edwards was brought in.
It is the attacking midfielder’s output that has attracted Southampton. Azaz is keen on the move and Southampton are readying a £12 million bid that exceeds Boro’s valuation. This means a deal is seen as very likely.
Mateus Fernandes is seemingly on his way out at St Mary’s. Azaz would likely replace the Portuguese in the attacking midfield position. The Irishman will give the Saints much needed quality and output as they set their sights on promotion.
