Southend United Announce Player Departure

Southend United have announced the termination of forward Dan Mooney’s contract via Twitter.

The National League club announced the termination of the forward’s contract by mutual termination on their Twitter account. The 24-year-old’s contract was due to expire in 2025 before this news.

Mooney has made 16 appearances for the Blues this season, who have faced considerable difficulties both on and off the pitch. His only goal came on the opening day in a 4-0 victory over Oldham Athletic. He only converted three times in 47 games for Southend.

The 24-year-old is a product of League One Fleetwood Town’s academy, leaving the club permanently for Altrincham in 2020. After two years with the Robins, he departed for Southend in July 2022. The forward only made four appearances for Fleetwood, just two of which were in the starting eleven in the EFL Trophy. His two appearances in League One came from the bench and totalled just nine minutes.

The Blues have impressed this season despite having one of the more modest squads in the National League. They currently occupy 15th despite the ten-point deduction they were handed earlier in the campaign. If not for that penalty, they would be in the playoff picture above Mooney’s former club Altrincham on goal difference in seventh.

The club are awaiting a takeover to be formally completed. This would put an end to a drawn-out saga where financial problems saw the future of the existence of the club brought into question.

Writer’s View

Mooney has not yet proven himself as a goalscoring forward, which is what many would be looking for. His poor return appears to have brought his days at Southend to a close. Given their current financial situation, it would make sense why they would want to end a player’s contract. However, given their squad size, it is a big risk for the team.
