Southend United face an anxious wait to discover whether forward Harry Cardwell’s injury is serious or a minor blow, according to journalist Chris Phillips.

Their leading man was forced off during Saturday’s FA Trophy clash with Hampton & Richmond with what has now been confirmed as an injury-related substitution.

Cardwell has had an excellent start to the season for Kevin Maher’s side, scoring 12 goals in 21 league appearances for the club and was the subject of a summer bid from League One side Exeter City.

Southend United have also lost forward Daniel Kanu after he was recalled by League One side Charlton Athletic, leaving the club even shorter on options as well as having a couple of players ruled out through injury.

Cardwell’s injury topped off a frustrating afternoon for Kevin Maher’s side who were on the receiving end of an FA Trophy exit after they lost on penalties and will miss out on a chance of silverware this season.

Nathan Ralph gave the home side the lead before playmaker Jack Bridge doubled Southend’s advantage. However, Seymour pulled a goal back before a 97th-minute own-goal from Scott-Morriss forced the tie to go to penalties.

Jack Wood missed Southend’s opening penalty and the rest were all converted until the scores went to 4-2 to Hampton & Richmond. Fonguck had the chance to keep the National League side in the competition but he was denied causing Southend to be eliminated.

Journalist Chris Phillips posted a tweet via his social media page to confirm the news regarding Cardwell’s substitution by stating…

‘A few tweets mentioned Harry Cardwell being taken off so just to clarify that was down to injury.”

It is not confirmed whether Cardwell has sustained a minor injury or whether he may be ruled out for the next few games.

Writer’s View

Harry Cardwell has been one of Southend United’s most important players so far this season and the club and supporters will be hoping it was just a minor issue such as a dead leg.

However, until confirmation is given, fans will be left worrying about whether he will be fit for the busy Christmas period or not.
