Southend United journalist Chris Phillips has confirmed the National League side are expected to make a move for a National League South midfielder once the club’s embargo is lifted, via Echo News.

The true identity of the midfielder in question is yet to be revealed, although that hasn’t stopped supporters from speculating across social media as to who they believe the midfielder is.

Christmas came early for supporters of the National League side when the club revealed that contracts between the new consortium and former owner Ron Martin had been successfully exchanged, with the deal expected to be completed in early 2024, once the council sign off on the final stage of the deal which will ultimately keep the club at Roots Hall.

However, the National League side are still under a transfer embargo and can only sign players that meet certain criteria that are decided by the division’s regulators themselves. The consortium, however, have confirmed that this embargo is expected to be lifted in the coming days, which will give Kevin Maher’s side the green light to sign new players moving forward.

In recent days, Southend United confirmed the return of academy graduate Henry Sandat who has re-joined the club on loan from Championship side Hull City and will remain with Kevin Maher’s side until the end of January.

Speaking on what supporters can expect transfer-wise from Southend United over the next few weeks, manager Kevin Maher stated…

“It’s not easy because of the time of year and no one wants to lose their players at this time.

“We still need news of it being lifted and there’s a process of bringing people in we’ll follow. But we’re always working and doing stuff behind the scenes.”

Social media rumours have already pointed the finger at James Morton from Weston Super-Mare but these reports are unconfirmed at this stage. With that being said, Morton certainly suits the type of player that Southend United currently require.

One clear thing is that the club will be targeting several new signings over the next few weeks as the club continues to plot a late push towards the National League play-off places.
