Steve Evans Replacement Identified for Rotherham United

Rotherham United

League One side Rotherham United have reportedly identified a former Championship manager as a potential candidate to take over as their new manager, should Steve Evans be sacked.

The former Stevenage manager took charge of the Millers for the final few games of last season, after their relegation back to League One was confirmed. He oversaw an overhaul of their playing squad including the additions of Jonson Clarke-Harris, Sean Raggett and Joe Rafferty amongst others.

However, the season has not panned out how many had anticipated. Our own League One Lowdown podcast had predicted that the Millers would be battling for promotion, finishing in the play-off spots. But in reality they find themselves currently sat in 14th place, with just one win in their last six games.

This poor run has seen them drop to 21st in the form table, with only Mansfield Town, Barnsley and Exeter City performing worse. This has led to questions being asked about Steve Evans‘ capability to push the Millers on. Now a new man has been linked to the role, should they make the decision to part ways.

Will Steve Evans be Sacked?

There is no doubt that Evans has not been a success this season. Many had expected a play-off push as a minimum. At the start of the season, they found themselves battling towards the relegation places, which many accepted as a result of their team bedding in their new squad. However, they improved their form to move further up the table showcasing that the ability is there, before ultimately settling back into the same situation as before.

Steve Evans does have credit in the back at Rotherham United, and it is likely that he wouldn’t have survived his first poor run without it. How long that credit will last remains to be seen. The season is only going to get more challenging with more injuries and fatigue likely to play a greater role in the final stretch.

It would not be surprising to see him go, or in typical Evans fashion jump off the sinking ship just before it goes under.

Who is being lined up to replace him at Rotherham United?

Former manager Paul Warne is a potential option for a return to the club should Evans be sacked, according to Alan Nixon. The report suggests that he is still admired at the club he left in 2022 to take over at Derby County with his reputation still intact, despite his recent sacking.

The Rams opted to part company with Warne earlier this month after guiding them back to the Championship but failing to push the club away from the upcoming relegation battle.

Warne has an extensive history at the club, having been assistant manager to several managers including Steve Evans, Neil Warnock, Neil Redfearn and more. He then took over as caretaker manager, before being appointed the full-time boss in 2017.
