Stevenage Announce Capture Of Championship Midfielder

Cardiff City midfielder, Eli King, has completed a loan switch to League One side, Stevenage following Boro manager, Alex Revell’s, hint at an imminent signing earlier in the day.

King spent the first half of last season on loan at League Two side, Morecambe, before being recalled in January.

Stevenage were searching for a new midfielder

Alex Revell was handed the task of building upon Stevenage’s impressive 9th place finish in League One last season after the former Boro player took up the role temporarily in the wake of Steve Evan’s managerial return to Rotherham in the closing stages of last season.

The 41-year-old has been piecing together a make-shift midfield so far and despite picking up all three points on the opening day against Shrewsbury, has clearly been keen to fix the issue.

Various players have been trialled in the holding midfield role for Stevenage so far this season, with 33-year-old defender, Nathan Thompson, even undertaking the role in pre-season, although Alex Revel has admitted it was a temporary fix, stating:

We’ve been playing Nathan Thompson as a holding midfielder and he’s done a great job all summer, he came back in top shape, but he’s not a midfielder. We’ve pushed him in there.

“When we looked in the summer, we had Nick Freeman out and all of a sudden we’re down to three midfielders.

“We needed to get another number in there”. (The Comet)

Eli King has been signed on loan from Cardiff to fix Revell’s issues

Stevenage have added another midfielder to their squad, as was teased by a report from Nick Metcalfe earlier in the day as Alex Revell admitted to the journalist that his club were looking to complete a new signing ‘within the next 24 hours’.

It took Boro significantly less than that to announce the loan signing of 21-year-old Cardiff City midfielder, Eli King.

King was announced by Stevenage to have joined the club on a season-long loan deal with the necessary arrangements having already been made for the Welshman to play in his new club’s clash against Burton Albion this Saturday.

The former Morecambe loanee will wear number 26 with the midfielder explaining to Stevenage’s YouTube channel, “I thought this would be the best place to come and learn and keep developing”.

King has Scottish Premiership and League Two experience

Eli King saw his development fast-tracked by the Bluebirds last season after impressing at League Two side, Morecambe, in the first six months of the season, netting twice and assisting two goals in twenty league appearances for the Shrimps.

Ross County loaned the Wales U21’s international for the remainder of the season with King making 18 appearances for the Scottish side as he helped them escape relegation from the top tier across a two-legged relegation play-off against Raith Rovers.

King will return to Cardiff in the summer of 2025 at which point the midfielder will have just a year remaining upon his three-year deal that was signed back in 2023.
